Taipei - Director's statement

"'Taipei’ is about love, alienation, loneliness, drugs, writing, technology – how we can exist and connect amidst all of the cultural detritus of the Internet age. I’m thrilled to be able to bring Tao Lin’s vision to the screen. The increasing reach of technology into our day-to-day experiences has dramatically impacted the manner in which people connect with one another. Alienation, self-medication, and anxiety are on the rise.

Yet, even in this brave new world, the importance of interconnectedness survives. We still look to those around us to aid in the undertaking of learning about ourselves. As Erin and Paul fall first into, and then out of, their breakneck romance, we follow them through wild gallery parties, MDMA trips under the mists of Niagara Falls, chaotic night markets, and on a journey into the heart of both contemporary America and Asia. This international, dizzying vision is part of what first appealed to me about the novel and I hope we've done it justice on film."
